The Untouchables - Are Pep's Manchester City side the best in Premier League history?

After rolling over Everton at Goodison Park, Manchester City are one win away from history. A win in the Manchester Derby in the coming weekend will secure the Premier League title in record time. Right now Pep's men side sit 16 points clear with eight games to go, and the margin has been substantial for most of the campaign. While everyone below them has been dropping points, City have been winning football matches. Only losing one game all season, and drawing just three, the so far illusive 100 point mark is within their grasp. A minimum of five wins and one draw will make The Citizens the first Premier League side to ever hit 100 points, but will it make them the best?

Pep Guardiola was called a fraud by many after his lacklustre first season in charge of City, and now on for a potential treble, he's left his neigh-sayer's red in the face. The question of the best of all time is thrown around way too often in football. Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo dominates the conversation in the minds of modern day football fans. But with so many changes in style football has undergone over the years, picking the best of all time is a tall order. However, with the Premier League starting in 1992, only 26 years ago, picking the best Premier League side of all time is much more accomplishable.

THE INVINCIBLES!

That is what any Arsenal fan reading this article would have been screaming since they clicked on it. I went into a lot of detail in an article I had published at THE VERSED (FKA Clickon Sports) about why the Invincible's were not as great as you remember. That same article was posted on this blog last October so feel free to click off this and give it a read but to quickly put this argument to rest. A lack of points when compared to other champions. A lack of goals when compared to other champions. A style of play towards the end of the campaign which SCREAMED fear of losing. Speaking of losing, LOSING the biggest game of the season in the Champions League to Chelsea. If you aren't convinced check out my full article on the matter, but although historic, Arsenal's Invinicbles are not the greatest. Sorry.

Now that's out the way let me explain why I believe Pep's City have a very strong case.

Anyone with a footballing brain can appreciate how Guardiola not only manages his side, but
coaches individual players on how to reach their full potential. Raheem Sterling being a prime example. Since the 2013/2014 season at Liverpool, Sterling has floundered, living off of his potential. Rumours off a move to Arsenal in part exchange for Alexis at the start of the season added more fuel to the fire. But now, with the current season still going strong, Sterling is enjoying his best year yet. A guaranteed starter with over 20 goals this campaign, and a shoe in for the World Cup. His erratic movements have been replaced with finely timed and methodically thought out runs. His sloppy final balls it no more, 16 league goals speaks for itself. Perhaps more clearly then any other player, Guardiola has been there to put an arm around the young winger and keep guiding him. Whether in training or mid way through a match, an arm around the shoulder and words of encouragement makes any player feel like gold. Sterling oozes confidence, and it is no coincidence that it coincides with Pep getting is team to play his way.

Speaking of Pep's way. City's Brazilian keeper Ederson was quoted stating that his side's tactics bring joy to all football fans. And he isn't wrong. An incredibly high pressing style, reminiscent of that of Pep's Barcelona side, forces opposition into submission. Keeping the ball away from their goal, and in the rare occasion Ederson does find the ball in his possession, a 60 yard cross field pass is one of the many strings to his bow. David Silva has been having a career defining season in midfield, when many tipped him to be on the way out. A Spaniard over looked for years in the Premier League now can not be ignored. Alongside Fernandinho who has been consistently solid, sometimes going un-noticed but never in a bad way. Of course the talisman Kevin De-Bruyne running the show will draw the headlines, and rightfully so, he's sublime. But every single player in the starting eleven is there because they fit the system. Sane and Sterling have been untouchable down the wings, and are leaps and bounds ahead of where they were 12 months ago.

You can criticise City for 'buying the league' but instead of just throwing money at star names like Arsenal and Manchester United have done this season, they've spend big on players who make their system fit. £50 million on a right back is ludicrous right? Is it when Kyle Walker has been comfortably the best wing back in the league all season and has been a nightmare of any opposition flank that has came across him. The same to be said about £60 million on a centre back right? Laporte has slotted into a defence that has been the stand out this campaign, after being called out for being shaky over the last couple of years. Very little has been spent going forward, and that's because Pep KNEW where the weaknesses were, and fixed them. Yes he had the financial means to bring in the best players, but so do Arsenal and they're in 6th. Pep and his team also has the tactical know how to spot and bring in appropriate targets.

Now into some good old fashion statistics. As mentioned, a win for City this coming week would mean they have secured the title quicker then any other side in Premier League history, which is historic in itself. Also as I mentioned, the form table would indicate that the champions will finish with over 100 points for the first time in Premier League history. Which wasn't even done in the old 42 game season format. Moving away from points. If the season was the end right now, they would have scored more then any of the champions from the last four years. And remember there is seven games to play, the record is in sight. 103 goals is the current record, held by Chelsea's 2010 title winning side. An average of two goals a game would ensure they beat that amount; so far they've averaged 2.8 per game. Switching lanes to defence, City would have to concede 8 more goals between now and the end of the season to end with the joint best defence of the decade. Any less and of course they'd end as the best defensive champions in recent times. With an average of 0.6 goals conceded per game, it's likely they'll hold that record as well.

So broken down, the stats point to Manchester City's 2017/2018 team - Winning the Premier League title, finishing with over 100 points which has never been done before, as well as winning it with 6 games to spare which is a record. On top of that - breaking the record for most Premier League goals scored in a season, and registering the best defensive record in the past decade (fourth best record for the champions this century.)

Now moving away from stats. City play with a style that is eye catching, and enjoyable for any football fan to take in. A style similar to that of the great Barcelona side of 2009-2011, said to be the best club side in European history. During a season when some of England's big guns have been torn apart by the media for playing unattractive and boring football, Pep's men have not only been entertaining, but incredible efficient. One league defeat makes them the second most winningest side currently in Europe's top five leagues this season, only behind the unbeaten Barcelona. With English football under constant scrutiny recently, Manchester City are a shining light. World class players from back to front. World beaters like KDB and Sergio Aguero. Breakthrough superstars like Sane, Sterling and Jesus. Proven masters such as David Silva and Vincent Kompany, The Citizens have it all.

A Champions League quarter final Wednesday 5th April is so far Pep's and City's biggest game of the season, a huge test away at Anfield. A reply of the one Premier League fixture they have lost this season. Nearly impossible to call (But I did, check out my most recent article). But win, lose or draw in Europe, a domestic season to remember Manchester City have put in. The best side in Premier League history? It's hard to argue against it.

Champions League Quarter Finals - Predictions

Europe's top competition is reaching boiling point. With only eight sides left battling it out for the mantel of European Champions. Out of the remaining sides three of them are hunting for their first European crown. Roma, Manchester City and Sevilla. All three sides in history with five titles also remain, in Liverpool, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. And of course, a repeat of last years final with Juventus and Real Madrid.

There are obvious favorites, dark horses, and massive underdogs. This stage of the competition always throws up interesting match ups, so lets see what this years has to offer.

Sevilla vs Bayern Munich.

Spanish side Sevilla already have their best ever placement in the Champions League to boast about. The Europa League specialists have never progressed past the last 16 in Europe's elite competition before. Achieving this by upsetting Jose's Manchester United in the last round, winning 2-1 away at Old Trafford.

But blocking their path to the semi-finals are soon to be German champions (again) Bayern Munich. Since Carlo Ancelotti's departure last October, the five time European champions have put their early season poor form behind them and are currently on a roll both domestically and in continental competition. This was shown when they easily swept past their Turkish opponents in the last round, winning 5-0 in the first leg to kill off the tie.

Despite Sevilla's heroics in reaching this round by toppling Manchester United, I feel like this is the end of the road for them. Wissam Ben Yedder's sublime form has earned him his first call up to the French national team, so Sevilla will have fire power going forward.

But if there is one thing Bayern Munich are known for (Other than making their league look like a cake walk.) It's turning on the style when the lights are at their brightest. With a front three of Muller, Lewandowski and Robben, I just don't see a way of the Spanish side's defense keeping them out. And that's what i'm going with a Bayern Munich win, 5-2 over two legs. Potentially with another Besiktas-style blow over in the second leg in Germany.

Juventus vs Real Madrid.

In a repeat of last years final, we have 12 time champions Real Madrid taking on the side with a record number of runners up medals in Juventus. Massimiliano Allergri got the better of Spurs in the last round, to see his side progress. Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain being the main attractions across both legs. Back in 2017 the game between these two sides was a lot more even then the 4-1 scoreline represents. Juve had put in a very admirable performance until the 80th minute where Madrid changed up a gear and killed off the final. In a one off game, late on especially, tactics go out the window and it comes down to who can force one final chance. And in Cardiff that was Zidane's side. However in a two legged affair, Allergri may have an advantage over Zidane when tactics are concerned. The Frenchman has came under fire for his lack of tactical knowledge in the League, and maybe the Italian Allegri could use this to his advantage in this tie. Finding a way to keep out the back-to back champions.

On the other hand. It's Real Madrid in a Champions League knockout match. Cristiano Ronaldo is breaking records left right and centre, becoming the first man in the history of the competition to score in the first eight games consecutively. Despite their worst league form in a decade, and a lack lustre group stage, Zidane's side blew past PSG in the last round. The French side many peoples favourites to go all the way. Almost in the vein of a local derby, form doesn't appear to matter when it comes to Real Madrid in the Champions League. Like any true world beater, Los Blancos know how to handle the pressure of a big game, and it has seen them collect accolade after accolade.

When comparing the two sides, my heart is telling me to go with Juventus. The Italian league leaders will be out for revenge after last years final, and Allergri will relish the opportunity to prove his tactical knowledge by knocking out the record breaking Real Madrid. Also hitting form at exactly the right time, in recent weeks Juventus have finally reclaimed top spot in Italy from Napoli, and seem to be in cruise control domestically. Meaning that their focus can be solely aimed towards ending their string of poor luck in the European cup and finally win the big one. Finally the idea of Gainluigi Buffon finally getting his hands on the one trophy that has eluded him is a story written in the heavens.

But then, my head is telling me to never back against Los Blanco. 12 time European champions. Back-to-back winners of the competition, the first time that has ever been achieved. A record breaking Cristiano Ronaldo who is flying at just the right time. Real Madrid are out of the title race in Spain, and therefore need a good showing in Europe to save their season. Perhaps even to save Zidane's job. I can think of more reasons why I believe Juve could upset the odds and knock out the holders. And yet, I'm going with a Real Madrid win. 4-2 on aggregate, but much like last years final, it will be a lot closer then the scoreline suggests.

Barcelona vs Roma.

Perhaps the tie which is easiest to call on paper sees Spanish league leaders Barcelona take on Roma. The second of the two Spanish vs Italian ties of the quarter final. Barcelona come into the game as heavy favourites, and rightfully so. With only one loss to their name in all competitions this season, that makes them the in form side left in the last eight. With the La Liga title all but won, and a Copa del rey final to take place in April, Catalonia's crowing jewel could be on their way to an historic treble. The first since Pep's great side of 2009. And only the second treble of the decade (Inter Milan under Jose in 2010.) To get to this stage Barcelona knocked out a resilient Chelsea side, 4-1 over two legs. Lionel Messi staring, scoring three of the goals across the games, and passing the 100 Champions League goal mark in record time. You can never over analyse Barcelona's attacking threat. With the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and the recently fit Dembele, you'd imagine they wouldn't even notice a lack of Philipe Coutinho in their side. The Brazilian of course cup tied after featuring for Liverpool in the group stage. Their only real criticism over the years has been a leaky defence. Which this season simply isn't the case. Having only conceded 13 league goals all season, one less then the praised defensive unit of Atletico Madrid. Good luck Roma.

Perhaps however, that isn't a bad thing. Roma come into this game with zero expectations. After drawing the favourites the pressure is 100% on their opponents, win or lose, Roma have over achieved in this years competition. Topping a group with Chelsea and Atleti in, as well as over coming a first leg defeat in Ukraine against Shakhtar to reach the last eight. But the Italians will not just be happy to make up the numbers, and they do have the quality to do something special. Brazilian number one Alisson between the sticks is as good as any keeper on the planet right now, and in front of him is a defence which will take some beating. But getting past Barca will ultimately come down to if Dzeko & CO can take their chances, few as they will be. As I mentioned, Barca's defence is solid, so chances will be few and far between but as Chelsea proved, they aren't unbreakable. The Bosnian in particular will have to be on top form to keep the European dream alive.

Despite everything I've just said, it doesn't look good for Roma. Maybe in Rome, with the Stadio Olympico bouncing, Roma may have a chance. But in Barcelona, I can only see one outcome. Their is only so much you can do when your opposition 's best player is perhaps the best in the history of the Game.

Lionel Messi appears to be on a personal quest to regain his lead over Cristiano Ronaldo in the number of Ballon D'or wins to their names. And a Champions League win will go a big way to securing the accolade for the Argentine. Over two legs I'm going for a Barcelona win, 6-2. Lionel Messi to steal the show again.

Liverpool vs Manchester City.

By far, the most interesting tie the quarter finals have thrown up is the one I've left until last. English champions elect Manchester City vs Five time European champions Liverpool. This one really is a coin flip, lets start with City. Pep's side have strolled to the League title, only losing one league game all season (we'll get to that.) And with a league cup already in the bag, a treble is well within reach for the blue half of Manchester. Despite a shocking home defeat to Basel in the last round, the work was done in the first leg, winning 4-0 away from home. That defeat is one of only four in all competitions, Pep's side have been closer to perfect. Many people, including me, consider this side to be the best the Premier League has ever seen. From back-to-front the team is perfectly balanced. A goal keeper who is up for pass of the season, and a striker willing to track back and do the work for his team. They all play for each other, and seem to have a togetherness that resonates when they step over the white lines. Sergio Aguero, flanked either side by Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling. With Gabriel Jesus waiting in the wings, makes up for perhaps the most intimidating striker force outside of Catalonia. Also with David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne both having the best seasons of their careers just behind the front three, it's hard to see any side stopping City.

But Liverpool already have. Manchester City's one league defeat came at Anfield, under the lights, four goals to three. In typical Liverpool style they conceded two late on to make it appear much closer then it was, but Liverpool bossed the league leaders. Mentally that must be huge for the reds, they known they can beat City. Plus when you have Euorpe's top goal scorer in Mo Salah, you can beat anyone! The Egyptian wide man has broken the following records this season: Most goals scored in a debut season for a foreigner in Premier League history. Most left footed goals scored in Premier League history. Most goals scored in a debut season in Liverpool history. Most goals scored in a season for Liverpool in the Premier League era. And we're still only in March, he is only three goals off scoring more then ANYONE in a single season in a 38 game Premier League season. Despite Salah's brilliance, he isn't a one man team. The Kop named 'Bobby' Firmino is enjoying the highest goal scoring season of his career, and Sadio Mane has already topped last seasons tally for both goals and assists. I mentioned City's front three being terrifying, Liverpool's could arguably be better. The heavy metal football of Klopp's side can put away any team in minutes, I don't care who you are, with Salah, Firmino and Mane in full flight, you can't stop them. Liverpool's biggest flaw is their defence, which despite appearing faulty at times away to Manchester United, have kept eight clean sheets in their last eleven. Lloris Karius showing great form between the sticks, and new signing Virgil Van Dijk leading the back four.

This really could go either way. I feel like both sides will win their home fixture, but I'm really struggling to pick a winner over two legs. City's advantage is that they not only have the squad to rotate and keep fresh, but they can do so knowing the league is virtually done. Where as Liverpool are in the middle of a battle for a Champions League position for next season.

By the time the second leg comes around their is a possibility that City could be Champions of England, and the treble will be that much closer. But as anyone will tell you, Anfield on a European night is something special. Liverpool have a love affair with the European cup, and I'm going to say... it will continue into the semi-finals. Over two legs Liverpool to win, 6-4. Crazy aggregate scoreline, for what I imagine to be two crazy games.

So there is my prediction for the quarter finals of the Champions League. Two made with relative ease and two that took real thinking. I like to think I know my stuff, we'll see if that still stands in a few weeks time.

I predict Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool to progress.

Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal - WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

The first major piece of silverware in the English game was up for grabs at Wembley as Arsenal and Manchester City battled it out for the Carabao Cup. Pep looking for his first piece of silverware of his managerial career in England. And Wenger looking to secure his first League Cup winners medal after twenty two years in charge of Arsenal.

Both sets of fans were in full voice on a sunny yet cold day in London, and it was the Londoners with the first chance of the game. Jack Wilshere latching onto a long ball, the ball eventually found Mesut Ozil who played it across to an unmarked Aubameyang. Somehow Arsenal's record signing failed to beat Claudio Bravo from point blank range, not once but twice. Well saved but he must score. Aubameyang struggled throughout the game to get away from Vincent Kompany. City's captain proving able to deal with the Gabonese striker along the ground, shoulder to shoulder and in the air. This being the only real chance the £60 million man had all game.

The first big chance fell to the Gunners, but all of the game was with City. David Silva in particular, who was untouchable all night, pulling the strings. And the Spaniard slipped a ball down Arsenal's right channel for Aguero to latch onto, the Argentine hitting the side netting. Speaking of City's number 10. Following a Claudio Bravo goal kick, Mustafi went up with Aguero to win the first header, but the German was easily out muscled. Poor from the big centre back as Aguero closed in on goal. Ospina's positioning was all wrong, in no mans land as the ball bounced towards him. Making Sergio's decision that much easier for him, taking it on the bounce and lifting it over the keeper and into an empty net. His 199th goal in his Manchester City career. Since day one Sergio Aguero has been loved by fans of the Citizens, and his stock is only growing higher. 1-0.

Jack Wilshere, Arsenal born and bred, the Englishman was the best player on the park for Arsenal. Winning a number of free-kicks in dangerous positions in City's half. But far to often wasted by Ozil. Who again will come under criticism for being invincible in a big game. Fernandinho was tasked with dealing with the German during the first 45 minutes and he made it look easy. Gundogan, another member of City's midfield who was sublime on the night. He makes the game look so easy at times and Arsenal didn't have an answer, even with Pep's side not even out of second gear. The German international has been growing more and more into his role since returning from injury. A brilliantly whipped ball onto the head of Kompany showed exactly how. The header going over the bar.

During the first 45 minutes Arsenal couldn't even get close to City. Chasing sky blue shadows. With the Premier League leaders nowhere near their best. Arsenal has cause for concern.

As the second half started it was like the first half had never ended. Manchester City still dominating the ball. On commentary it was mentioned how it hasn't been since 1999 that a final has finished 1-0. And just like that, City had one hand on the cup. Kevin De Bruyne fired a corner hard and low, into Gundogan on the edge of the box. Something off the training ground as the German took the shot of first time. He didn't catch it quite right however but on hand was club captain Vincent Kompany to poke home. Doubling City's lead. The man who has lifted this cup twice in the last five years was well on his way to lifting it again. A fan favourite, a club icon. The Belgian has been through hard times as of late. Injury after injury seemingly see his place in the City side become less of a certainty. But he steps up in the big game once again.

Now City were cooking on gas. They'd gone from second gear in the first half, to top gear and showed no signs of slowing down. For me the star man on the night, David Silva, managed to wiggle away from Callum Chambers with a brilliant first touch. Letting it run with his right before striking across goal with his left with complete accuracy. Ospina could only hope as he fell to his left hand side, for the ball to nestle in the bottom corner. The three eldest statesmen of this great City side. Three of the men there from the start of this great journey, and they all struck in the final. Aguero, Kompany and now David Silva. In this case six players around Silva couldn't stop him getting his shot off, Arsenal were being outclassed. Silva scoring in his third successive league cup final.

City played out the final 20 minutes in complete control. The game was won and they could afford to rest star men, Aguero making way for the returning Jesus. Once the final whistle was blown the majority of the Arsenal half of the stadium had already emptied. A walk in the park for the winners.

What we saw today was an example of two sides on completely different planets in every department. Had Arsenal been just outplayed by a superior Manchester City side, they would not be alone in that. Pep's men have blown away team after team this season. But that wasn't the case. Arsenal allowed themselves to be outplayed by showing a total lack of desire and character after going a goal down. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was supposed to be the answer to Arsenal's prayers following the departure of Alexis. (Check out my piece of why this isn't a great move for the Gunners.) And today he looked up for it for all of 35 minutes. He can be seen walking as the first half drew to a close, and he didn't come out for the second half. Aubameyang wasn't alone in this department. Mesut Ozil again went missing. On the back of signing a club record contract in January, he hasn't looked half the player we know he can be. Aaron Ramsey maybe let off as he was rushed back to play in this game, potentially not 100%. But the Welshman was part of the Arsenal side walking around the Wembley pitch while City played them off the park.

Desire, or lack of, was a huge factor in Arsenal folding to their opponents tonight, but a shambled of a defensive display didn't help their cause. For the first goal Mustafi 100% has to be stronger. Standing at over 6ft tall, with Aguero not even close to that, being nudged off of the ball as easily as he was is embarrassing. When you're the central defender in this position, you have to take authority. Aguero was gifted a goal. And from then on it was more of the same. Pass after pass from Silva, De Bruyne and Gundogan found it's way onto runners in blue. Arsenal's channels exposed countless times. Wenger lined his side up in the same way he did during last seasons FA Cup Semi-Final against Pep and Manchester City. However, this is not the same side. City found it far to easy to find space around the penalty area. Arsenal's defence found themselves running in circles.

One moment that must hurt for Arsenal fans, and all football fans was when a picture was snapped of an almost empty pitch at Wembley stadium. Only two feet planted on the turf, and those are the feet of Santi Cazola. Arsene Wenger really could have used to magic of Santi today. And with his career dwindling away, not playing in way over a year due to injury. Walking on the pitch, almost as if he wants the feeling of playing again. A truly horrible sight to see, one of Europe's greatest play makers.

Despite all of Arsenal's short comings today, the final belonged to Manchester City. Reasoning why Pep's side won't be talked about too much following their win is they were at no where near their best. 15 dazzling minutes around the hour mark, leading to Kompany's and Silva's goal but besides that, the didn't have to be at even 50%. This is a City side, without the injured Raheem Sterling. Gabriel Jesus only returning from injury in the dying minutes from the bench. Star shot stopper Ederson, who has been integral so far in his debut season didn't even feature on the night. Fabian Delph, who's had his career reborn by Pep in his new position at left back missed the final through suspension. So a Manchester City side, missing a number of key players, brushed aside Arsenal and made light work of it.

Following the game Kevin De Bruyne stated how this side aren't even close to the finished article yet, and that should send shivers down the spine of any side around Europe. With the Premier League title all but won, a maximum of five more wins will secure it, the League Cup locked up in the trophy cabinet again. Pep can put his focus on the Champions League. A 4-0 win away at Basel in the first leg of their round of 16 tie means they're all but into the next round. No one will want to draw Manchester City. A domestic double virtually sealed at this point, you wouldn't bet against a historic treble. The first treble by any English side since the red half of Manchester did it in 1999. (Only Barcelona and Inter Milan have done it across Europe since '99.) Should Manchester City join that elusive club, Pep is well within his rights to be called, potentially the greatest manager of his era.

Cup final day. The one day you'd think you can guarantee all 22 men on the pitch would give their all until the final whistle. Whether it was the quality of Manchester City driving the motivation from them. Or simply a poor attitude on the part of the men in red. Arsenal crumbled when City thrived. Congratulations Manchester City. Carabao Cup winners 2018.

Champions League Round of 16 - Part One

The very peak of club competition in Europe is back. The UEFA Champions League. The group stage is over and the round of 16 has begun, with four huge games taking place. The Champions of Europe Real Madrid facing off against Paris Saint Germain, or as Spanish publication Marca put it 'Champions vs Contenders.' The two most lethal attacks in England faced off against two giants of their respective domestic leagues. As FC Basel and Porto hosted Manchester City and Liverpool. And Harry Kane faced the task of breaking through one of Europe's most rigid back lines as Italian champions Juventus welcomed Spurs.

Juventus 2-2 Tottenham

Goals -  Higuian 2', 9' (P) - Kane 35' & Eriksen 71'

We'll start in Turin on Tuesday night. The atmosphere was electric for what promised to be a masterclass in defensive football against the in form striker in Europe. But is was the home side which fired first. After Dembele gave away a silly free-kick inside the first 30 seconds 35 yards from goal. The ball was clipped into the channel to the waiting Gonzalo Higuian who expertly took it first time on the volley into the bottom left hand corner. Lloris got a touch on the ball but not enough to keep it out.

Juventus started the game brilliantly, and they continued to cause problems for the visitors. The ball was played in from the left where Federico Bernadeshi beat Ben Davies to the ball and went down in the area. Penalty to Juventus. And much like the first goal, Higuian fired the ball into the bottom left corner. Lloris again getting his right hand to the ball but not enough to make the save. Inside 10 minutes the home side lead by 2.

It took going down by two for Spurs to finally show some signs of life. Harry Kane made a darting run into the box before going down just to the left of the six yard box. The referee however correctly judged it to not be worth a penalty. Then a beautifully played ball into the box by Christan Eriksen found it's way onto Harry Kane's head. Six yards out, he couldn't beat Buffon. The Italian producing an excellent point blank save, when the Englishman really should score. Harry Kane however wouldn't be denied again. Dele Ali played a perfectly waited ball through and Kane took it on his right, past the on rushing Buffon, before slotting it into the empty net with his left. Spurs have a crucial away goal and a way back into the game.

Enter Douglas Costs. The Brazilian made a sublime run down the left, taking two Tottenham players out of the game before being brought down in the box by Aurier, another Penalty. On the stroke of half time Higuian stepped up for his hat-trick, only to be denied by the cross bar after blasting the spot kick down the middle! The half ends 2-1 to Juventus.

As the second half began Juve kept us their masterclass performance, with Bernadeshi cutting in from the right and whipping the ball towards the corner. Hugo Lloris pulling out a big save to keep the deficit to one. But as the half went on Spurs played their way more and more into the game. This time is was Spurs winning a free-kick just outside the penalty area, and up stepped Christian Eriksen. A sublime free-kick, curling it down low, to the right of the wall, wrong footing Buffon and into the corner. The Italian, much like Lloris in the first half, got to the ball, but it still found it's way in. The English side had fought back level.

And that is how the game ended. A brilliant example of Champions League football. All to play for in London in two weeks time. Juve 2-2 Spurs.

FC Basel 0-4 Manchester City

Goals - Gundogan 14', 53' & Bernando Silva 18' & Aguero 23'

We're used to seeing City blow teams away at this point in the season and Basel welcomed the English champions elect with the hopes of stopping them. The first chance of the game actually fell to the home side, a ball over the back to Dimitri Oberlin, the Cameroonian striker beating Ederson to the ball but failing to make any real contact on he ball. This miss would cost the home side as City then turned it on. A corner from City's left was played into the near post, where Gundogan produced a brilliant header, inside the post, no chance for the goal keeper. The away side where one up after 14 minutes.

Less then four minutes later City where doubling their lead. Sterling played the ball across the box where Bernado Silva collected it and played the ball towards the top left hand corner. The Basel keeper made a mess of it, allowing the ball to go through his hand and into the net. City where out to end this tie quickly.

Up stepped EA's Premier League Player of the Month for January, Sergio Aguero to make it three for City five minutes after Silva's goal. Picking the ball up 30 yards from goal, he took one touch to set it before striking the ball into the bottom left corner. Again questions must be asked about the keeper who didn't even move. The Argentine striker is in fine form, and he had put the game beyond Basel inside 23 minutes. The rest of the half played out comfortably for the away side, ending the half 3-0 up.

With all the respect to Basel, City were in a class of their own on the night, as they have been for much of the season. And the goal of the game was to follow, Gundogan getting his second. As he stepped inside a defender and whipped a delicious shot into the bottom right corner. Coolness personified, the tie now surly beyond Basel's reach.

The away side easily could have had more but the game finished 4-0 to the Premier League leaders. A walk in the park for most of the night.

Porto 0-5 Liverpool

Goals - Mane 25', 53', 85' & Salah 29' & Firmino 69'

Portuguese side and hosts Porto have an exceptional home record in the Champions League, and welcomed five time European Champions Liverpool on Valentines day. Both visits to Porto for Liverpool in the past have ended in draws. A record they looked to end on the night. Despite their fierce front line Liverpool always look shaky at the back, and it showed in the opening minutes. A strike from the edge of the box deflected onto the roof of Karius' net with the keeper stranded, however it was a brilliant block by Lovren. However the English side then started to click. Gini Widjnaldum worked his way into the box, and after his shot was blocked he played the ball out to the waiting Sadio Mane. The Senegalese wide man slotted the ball under the goal keeper and into the net. For all their good work at the start of the game the home side were behind.

Porto then looked the side shaking defensively, and they were punished. A poor clearance was picked up by James Milner, who worked his way inside and rattled the post with a curling effort. Only for Mo Salah, the King of Egypt, to pick the ball up on the bounce, flick it over the keeper, then keep it up with his head, committing the defender and tap it into the empty bottom right corner. Quality from the winger, his 30th goal of an incredible debut season for the reds. It was 2-0 to the away side. Porto tried to find their way back into the game throughout the remainder of the half, but with no luck. The half ended with Liverpool in the driving seat.

No team in the world can tear a team apart on the break just like Liverpool, and Porto found that out minutes into the second half. Milner won it back just outside Liverpool's penalty area, and Mane played it into Firmino. A sublime flick out to the right found Mo Salah, who made up 30 yards instantly and played a pass through the defence back into Bobby Firmino. The Brazilian's shot was saved, but Sadio Mane fired in the rebound for his second and Liverpool's third. One foot in the quarter finals.

Liverpool were rolling, and Porto were at 6's and 7's at the back. Mane dispossessing his man in midfield, showing great strength to hold off the challenge before playing a pass into James Milner. The Englishman pulled it back into the on running Roberto Fimino, who mad no mistake this time and fired into the bottom left hand corner. 4-0. Liverpool's front three all on the score sheet. It was getting worse for the home side, the energy really sapped out of the stadium with this goal.

Mane saved the best for last however. A delightful flick over the defender into Danny Ings, the Englishman played it back into Sadio, with all the space in the world. He struck through the ball brilliantly, unstoppable to the keepers left, Mane had his hat-trick, Liverpool had five!

A masterclass from Jurgen Klopp's men who, much like Man City the night before, can almost start thinking about the next round! Porto 0-5 Liverpool.

Real Madrid 3-1 PSG

Goals - Ronaldo 45' (P), 83' & Marcelo 86' - Rabiot 33'

The last side the lift the famous trophy hosting many peoples favourites to be the next. The former most expensive player on the planet versus the current. Real Madrid taking on PSG. Out of form in the League, Madrid's season relies 100% on this competition. And the French league leaders would love nothing more then to end that season. The opening stages played out mostly in midfield, with the first chance coming for the home side. Kroos curling a left footed shot to the goalkeeper's right. The save was made easily enough, only for Marquinios to almost knock the ball into his own net. The ball luckily for PSG went behind for a corner, which came to nothing.

The home side continued to press, Marcelo looking brilliant from left back, and he darted down the left before playing a brilliant ball to the right for Cristiano Ronaldo to run onto. But the man on 99 Champions League goals for Madrid couldn't beat Areola in the PSG goal. Despite their early chances it was Madrid who found themselves behind just after the half hour. A ball played in by Mbappe was poorly dealt with by the Madrid defence, Neymar with a deft flick behind into the onrushing Frenchman Rabio. Who dispatched brilliantly to put the away side ahead.

The goal didn't do much to knock Madrid's attitude to the game, Ronaldo blazing over with his left when he really should have done better. And with minutes to go until half time a cleverly whipper left footed strike from Benzema was denied brilliantly by Areola down to his right. However from the resulting corner Kroos went down under a challenge from Meunier, too easily perhaps, but the referee pointed from the spot. For CR7 to fire expertly into the bottom corner for Madrid's equaliser and his 100th Champions League goal for Los Blancos. Capping off the half at 1-1.

Conceding right on the break seemed to light a fire under the away side, who came out flying in the second half. Mbappe firing across goal from right to left, forcing Navas into a good save. Dani Alves then arrived a fraction of a second too late to turn a cross into the net for his side, PSG were on top in the Bernabeu. However much like when they scored against the run of play in the first half, the hosts hit right back in the second. Substitute Marco Asensio made his way down PSG's right hand side and drilled in the cross. Areola at fault for the first time all game, parried the cross to the one man you don't want a ball to fall to in your box, Ronaldo. Who turned the ball off his knee with seven minutes to play for the holders to take the lead.

Marcelo who was sublime all night then put the nail in the coffin for PSG. Playing the ball down the left, first into Kroos then to Asensio, he struck a first time shot straight at the keeper. But a deflection off of a Paris Saint Germain defender made it unstoppable for Areola. The ball lifted past him and into the net, Madrid had struck twice in four minutes to put the tie massively in their hands. 3-1 to the holders.

There was time for a late Neymar chance, for the Brazilian to blaze over with the last kick of the game. The 12 time champions of Europe have a huge advantage going to Paris in two weeks time. But Rabiot's away goal means that the tie is still very much alive. Real Madrid 3-1 Paris Saint Germain.

All in all week one of the Round of 16 was an example of the elite level of European football. Liverpool and Manchester City both blowing away their opponents away from home. Spurs showing they can hang with the elite, and they don't come much more elite then Juventus. And Real Madrid answering their critics the only way they know how, winning in Europe. Onto week two.

First weekend of the Premier League season - The Talking Points

The Premier League is back and wow was it come back with a bang! 31 goals scored across the ten opening games, a handful of questions answered and a lot more asked. The champions flopped, the favourites flourished, and more then a few surprises were thrown up. So let's look at the talking points from the opening weekend of the new Premier League season and the highlights so far.  

Arsenal 4-3 Leicester City - Wenger in? Wenger out? Wenger in? Wenger out? Rinse, repeat.

It took Alexandre Lacazette less then 120 seconds to announce himself to English football, planting a header beautifully into the bottom left hand corner and waking up the Arsenal fans at the start of the new season. For just over two minutes the Gunners looked to have everything in place, they looked as if they could take on the world and compete for the title, Arsenal Fan TV was set for a positive season premier. And then, a deep ball into the Arsenal box, from a short corner which was completed missed by the Arsenal defence, Cech in no mans land, Okazaki nods in, 1-1, more of the same from the gunners. In one of the most incredible season openers in Premier League history, the champions from two years ago In Leicester looked like upsetting the home side, leading 3-2 with just 7 minutes to go. Jamie Vardy's brace following Okazaki's early equaliser, and the Englishman looked back to his best. But then a brilliantly taken finish from Welshman Aaron Ramsey, followed quickly by a sublime Giroud header, bouncing in off of the bar, gave Arsenal all three points on the opening day. Despite a victory, and a very good attacking display, questions have to be asked about Arsenal. I pointed it out in my season preview, that Arsenal have done NOTHING this transfer window to deal with their immediate problems. Yes, the signing of Lacazette will go a long way to hide those problems, he looked very sharp and he will score you 20+ goals, but even with the £60 million striker, Arsenal looked exactly the same side as they did last year. Going forward they always looked a threat, Jamie Carragher on commentary summarised it perfectly, Leicester (despite conceding 4) didn't look awful at the back, Arsenal just showed the class to create the chances. This was the same last season, and the season before that, and the season before that, and the season... you get the picture. So why did they not splash the cash on a defender or two? This game told Arsenal fans exactly what I told everyone in my preview last week. Expect more of the same from Arsenal, going forward they're world class, defensively they'er poor. Their season will ultimately come down to the same question it always does in North London. Wenger in? Or Wenger out?

Watford 3-3 Liverpool - Corners... Ever thought about defending them Liverpool?

Now... as a Liverpool fan, I can be accused of being biased towards the red men. But my god, I've never seen such a contrast on a football pitch in my life, let alone between an attack and defence from the side team. The first set piece of the season... let me say that again. THE FIRST SET PIECE OF THE SEASON... that Liverpool had to defend, and it lead to a goal. Stefano Okaka, a 6ft something striker, with a huge presence and a massive build, was given a free run into the 6 yard box, to head in from a corner with no challenge from anyone. The Watford striker's performance will have Dejan Lovren having nightmares until they meet again, the Croatian centre back looked like a child trying to keep him out. It's gotten to the point that a corner is as good as a penalty against Liverpool, in fact, Mignolet has a better rate of saving spot kicks then corners if you ask me. And then, just like that, we saw the other side of Liverpool. A lovely passing move, capped off by a perfectly weighted ball through by Emre Can and an even better finish by Sadio Mane, and the 5 time European champions were level. Now remember what I said about Arsenal after Lacazette scored? That everything looked brilliant for all of two minutes? Well... Another ball into the box was poorly dealt with, and Doucoure stabbed the ball into the net to give the home side the lead again heading into the break. Again the Liverpool defence was found wanting, and again they had gone behind to a Watford side that hadn't really posed a threat, making the two goals conceded even worse. Then for 40 minutes we were reminded just how good Liverpool could be. Mo Salah gave us the first real showing of his incredible pace, beating Gomes to a through ball which looked impossible to reach, going down under the challenge and winning a penalty. Firmino calmly slotted into the bottom left corner to equalise, before just three minutes later, the Brazilian lifted the ball over the advancing Watford keeper, for Mo Salah to latch onto and knock in his debut goal, giving his new side the lead for the first time on the day. What followed was 30 minutes of smooth sailing for the leaders, before... you guessed it... another poorly defended set piece. In the 94th minute another corner was whipped in, Liverpool failed to deal with it after a poor header from Wijnaldum, and eventually Miguel Britos bundled the ball over the line to snatch a point for the Hornets. I don't really know what to say about this game to be honest, it's all been said before, not just over the last 24 hours but over the last few years, Liverpool simply look poor at the back. You could take the review of Arsenal's opening day, replace the name Arsenal with Liverpool and you'd have a pretty accurate overview of the state of the club. Going forward last season, Liverpool looked brilliant, and this summer they've strengthened in that area. Bringing in Salah who scored on his league debut, and looked very impressive in doing so. But the priority for Liverpool coming into the summer was to strengthen their back line, their defence, it simply wasn't strong enough, and the new season has started with no change being made! It's almost laughable how poor the red's were defensively against Watford, which is an even bigger shame when you consider how good their front three performed. Salah, Mane and Firmino looked great going forward, and if they hold onto Coutinho, they'll have perhaps the most potent attack in the league. But all of this is wasted because defensively, Jurgen Klopp's side is shocking defensively. A Champions League attack, with a relegation standard defence. It doesn't quite add up.

Chelsea 2-3 Burnley - 5 goals, 2 red cards, 8 yellow cards, 1 huge shock.

Chelsea became only the seconds defending champions to lose the first game of the following season. (For all you trivia lovers, Leicester City last season became the first) But the game wasn't all cut and dry, like the first two I have spoke about so far, it was an action packed 90 minutes. Chelsea's new full time captain Gary Cahill followed were John Terry left off, leaving games at Stanford Bridge early. A horrible tackle saw the Englishman given his marching orders just 14 minutes in, and the red card was the beginning of perhaps the worst half in Chelsea's Premier League history, and that isn't an over estimation. A Sam Vokes Brace, either side of a Stephen Ward goal, saw the champions going into half time, at home, with ten men, 3-0 down to a side highly tipped to be relegated! Changed were quickly made and record signing Alvaro Morata was given his debut and it didn't take the former Real Madrid striker long to continue the trend of debut goals this weekend. The ball was whipped in from Willian and Morata turned the ball in with a diving header to start the comeback. Mortata then went from hero to zero, turning a goal bound effort over the line from an offside position, ruling it out. Before Chelsea had the chance to add to their tally, Cesc Fabregas but in a late contender for worse tackle of the game, earning himself a red card and Chelsea we're reduced to 9! Despite this the final 10 minutes were all Chelsea, and David Luiz added a second for the champions, leading to a very nervy last few minutes. But Sean Dyche's side held on for a famous three points. So... what now? Antonio Conte has openly said he isn't happy with the lack of funds being made available to him in order to boost his squad, the Italian stated he simply doesn't not have enough players to fight on all front this season. And obviously, the early red card to Cahill didn't help things, as a senior figure of the side, the centre back should know better. But that doesn't change the fact that, for the first 45 minutes, Chelsea were second best against Burnley, a side set to battle relegation. All over the park they looked a yard off the pace, it took Mortata coming on in the second half for the champions to have any attacking threat. With Hazard out, Pedro out, and Morata still not deemed fit enough to start, Chelsea's attack looks very thin and it showed on the opening day.  As I previously mentioned only Leicester City had lost on match day one after winning the title the season before, now I am in no way suggesting Chelsea will end up having a season similar to the midlands club from last season, but you have to think how unprepared are Chelsea coming into this campaign. With a full strength starting eleven, they can compete with the best, but beyond that, there simply isn't enough for the London club to compete on all fronts. I would expect Roman Abramovic to get him check book out between now and August 31st, if not, what are the odds on Conte walking out before the end of the season? Think about it.

Brighton and Hove Albion 0-2 Manchester City - Pep's men spoil the party on the coast.

Despite rugged resistance from the home side, the early favourites started their campaign with what was expected from them, a win. When it was announced that Brighton's first ever Premier League game would be against Manchester City you couldn't help but feel sorry for the newly promoted side. And the 22% possession the home side saw made their first outing a lot of hard work, but they truly put up a fight. As expected however, the blue half of Manchester were the better side throughout, Gabriel Jesus coming close early on, forcing a sublime save from Brighton keeper Mathew Ryan, this was followed by the Brazilian having the ball in the net, but disallowed for hand ball. Other then Gabriel's bright spark, Pep's side never quite clicked into gear, which saw half time arrive, with the score still at 0-0. The second half saw more of the same to begin with, all the possession, but few clear chance for City. The best falling to Aguero, who intercepted an under hit back pass, only to put the ball wide of the post. However as I'm sure you could guess, the Argentinian wouldn't waste another chance, picking up the ball to the right hand side of the box, and firing expertly into the far left hand corner, giving City the lead. Once ahead, City started to play themselves more into the game, Kyle Walker impressing on his debut and drawing a free kick. This free kick lead to a corner, which lead to Manchester City's second, and an own goal off of Lewis Dunk, to seal all three points of the blues. Despite not quick clicking into gear fully, City picked up all three points and a clean sheet on the opening day, the same of which can not be said about many sides. What was interesting about this game was, as a unit, they looked a lot more drilled, the side seemed to have a much clearer idea of what their managed wanted from them. The new signings at full back of Danilo and Kyle walker slotted in seamlessly, and the rest of the side seemed to follow suit. The massive possession figure is very reminiscent of Pep's former sides in Barcelona and Bayern Munich, all over the pitch City dictated the play, meaning that despite their attacking ventures not all coming off, they never looked in doubt. Then when you think, with the likes of Jesus and Aguero leading the line, City won't need too many chances to find the back of the net throughout the season. The biggest talking point from this game however is how much room this side still has to grow. At no point during the game did they look like the finished product, and this is what it going to be a sight for sore eyes for City fans. They didn't look like the finished product, and they registered a comfortable win. Now yes it was against Brighton, but last season, that was the kind of game City could have easily slipped up in, but they registered their first win of the season, and left room to grow. Watch this space.

The best of the rest -

Now, before I go over the final game of the weekend lets look at the remaining games from match week one. Huddesfield Town are currently top of the league after beating Crystal Palace 3-0 in their first every Premier League game! Historic. Spurs started their campaign with a 2-0 away win at Newcastle, a game which was perfectly balanced until Jonjo Shelvey stood on Dele Ali's ankle and the Newcastle captain for the day was given his marching orders. Stupid. Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the game on his return to Goodison Park, breaking the record for longest period between two goals for the same club. 13 years. Despite having less then 30% possession at home, West Brom turned over Bournemouth 1-0. Stats aren't everything. And the only 0-0 draw of the weekend saw Southampton and Swansea play out an even game, a steady start for two sides with potentially tough seasons ahead of them. Stale mate.

Manchester United 4-0 West Ham United - Saved the best for last.

The best performance by any side on the opening weekend, and it was the last game to be played. Drawing match day one to a close was Jose Mourinho's Manchester United and to put it simply, they were sublime. From the first whistle the red devils looks dangerous, and Lukaku was appearing to be a handful for the West Ham defence, so when he ended a sweeping counter attack, by firing the ball in off of the post, it had been coming, The Belgian always looked to find the space behind the defence and with the home side seemingly always on the front foot, it played right into Lukaku's hands. After conceding West Ham did an okay job keeping United out for the remaining 10 minutes of the first half, but as soon as the second 45 minutes began, Jose's men went up a gear. Again it was the new boy Lukaku, heading in a free kick, out jumping the entire West Ham defence and continuing his near perfect debut! However for the remainder of the game, the striker turned provider, bringing the likes of Rashford and Pogba into the game any chance he got. Speaking of Rashford, the young Englishman look incredibly sharp, opening up his body and steering a shot just wide on the counter attack. This was just before he fired a beautiful curling shot onto the inside of the post, Rashford looked back to his best. Next to create nightmares for the Hammers was Anthony Martial. The Frenchman showed his incredible pace to burst through a weak West Ham back line and provide a smart finish past an on rushing Joe Hart. And last but certainly not least we saw the man who is now formerly, the world most expensive player, Paul Pogba, firing home from outside the box. A very good finish to cap off a very impressive performance from the Frenchman. From start to Finish United were a class above their opponents on the day, and from back to front, man for man, they were the better team. Nemanja Matic anchoring the midfield was a revelation for United, giving Pogba the freedom to roam he was missing last season, suddenly his £40 million price tag from Chelsea looks like a steal. Then as I mentioned we have Pogba himself. He looked like a different player from least season, strong on the ball, involved in every attack, which is what we didn't see from him last time out. With Matic behind him, Pogba isn't required to do the 'dirty work' and he can play in a role he suits. Henrikh Mkhitaryan's involvement seems to have gone very much under the radar so far, the Armenian however was perhaps the stand out performer on the day! Creating two goals and providing that bit of creativity when it was needed, the former Dortmund midfielder had the 'it factor' which lead to so many of the home side's chances. And then of course, last but not least, the man of the hour, the new boy, Lukaku. I was very doubtful of the Belgian striker and his huge price tag, I didn't feel like he was worth anywhere near the £72 million spent on him, with so much of his game yet to be up to standard. But in this game, he proved me wrong. We all know how good he is one on one, and we all know how much of an impact his presence has on his opposition, but for me, he played the perfect game. Moving constantly, splitting the centre backs every chance he got, holding the ball up and bringing the likes of Rashford and Pogba into play, and he was just simply, too much for West Ham to handle. All in all, Manchester United stole the show during an excellent opening weekend, and firmly staked an early claim to be one of the front runners this season.

So match day one has been brought to a close and the Premier League 2017/2018 season is underway, and what a way to start! Over the course of the 10 games we had everything, early goals to late drama, goal fests to tightly contested fixtures, even games to one sides routes. I think it's safe to say, we're all very much glad it's back!

The World's Richest 'Guests' - Can Manchester City win England's first Champions League in 4 Years?

Thanks to Kevin de Bruyne's late strike against PSG in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter final, Manchester City have progressed to the semi finals for the first time in the history of the club. After a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Paris, the two away goals gave Manchester City a great opportunity to progress past the French champions. The Manchester club faithful had the England number one Joe Hart to thank for producing some incredible saves throughout the game, namely keeping out a thunderous Zlatan Ibrahimovic free kick. The luck appeared to be against City however when top goal scorer and one of the world's top strikers Sergio Aguero missed from the spot in the first half. But with fifthteen minute left on the clock, the Belgian de Bruyne scored the goal which would secure the progression to the last four, with Manchester City's only shot on target over the 90 minutes of football at the Etihad! Paris Saint Germain coach and former French center back Laurent Blanc came out after the game and congratulated Manchester City for becoming the 'guests in the semi final draw' alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Now although the holders Barcelona and five time winners Bayern are yet to guarantee their progression to the semi final, with both teams playing their quarter final second legs tonight! The final four in Europe's elite competition has been subject to very little change in the last 5 years, with 2014 being the only year since 2011 where either Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Barcelona did not appear in the bracket for the semi final. In 2012 the eventual winners Chelsea joined the elite group, only to fall in the group stages in the next season. In 2013, Borussia Dortmund progressed all the way to the final, knocking out Real Madrid in the semi finals! However they fell to fellow Germans Bayern Munich in the final. During the 2014 season, Athletico Madird knocked out Barcelona on their road to the final, to be toppled by cross town rivals Real Madrid late on. And finally, Italian giants Juventus progressed to the final last year after knocking off Real Madrid in the semi Finals, however they couldn't handle the 'MSN' strike force of the Catalan giants and they lost 3-1 in Berlin. History is not on the side of Manchester City, with the big guns of European football dominating the champions league in recent years, but can Manuel Pellegrini's side bring the giant trophy back to England for the first time in four years?

Well when you look at the Manchester City side, in terms of star power, they aren't too out gunned by the sides they'll have to beat if they wish to win their first Champions League. With the likes of Yaya Toure, who can be unplayable on his day! Vincent Kompany, a man who's importance to the City team is so evident by defensive performances when he is absent costing his side. David Silva, a player who is no doubt one of the most gifted play makers on the planet. But with a very impressive record of 96 goals in only 127 league starts, the Argentine front man Sergio Aguero may be the key to City's victory! Despite missing a fair period of the last couple of seasons with injury, his goal scoring rate has not diminished, and despite missing a penalty in the win over PSG 'Kun' could go toe to toe with any player the other three semi finalists have to offer. Manchester City's number 10 has certainly got the pedigree to perform against the biggest sides, with a hat-trick against Bayern Munich last season for City and goals against Real Madrid and Barcelona in his Atletico Madrid days there is no doubt he is the man to watch out for.

Sergio Aguero will certainly have the chances to make an impact, especially playing along side club record signing Kevin de Bruyne. The Belgian has made a huge splash since returning to the Barclays Premier league and has been one of the stand out performers for City this season. Now while Aguero is Manchester City's top goal scorer, when it comes to having a hand in the goal, the £55million man is neck and neck with his Argentine team mate, with de Bruyne being involved in 27 goals this term in all competitions (15 goals and 12 assists) a figure level with that of 'Kun' Aguero. Now the Belgian has been the subject of plenty of ridicule during his career, and he was written off by many after his move to Werder Bremen was made official in 2014 but he proved himself to be every bit the player he was rumored to be and in just over a years time, he had returned to England and he hasn't looked back. The incredible talent of the young midfielder could have a big impact on Manchester City's dreams!

If the remaining fixtures in the Quarter finals go as expected it is no doubt that Manchester City will be the underdogs to reach the finals and then to win it. However their potential opponents aren't invincible! A Cristiano Ronalso inspired Real Madrid progressed past Wolfsberg last night, but a 2-0 defeat in the first leg shows if a team comes at Madird, they really can be made to look poor at the back! Despite eventually rolling over Juventus 4-2 in the second leg of their round of 16 tie, Bayern Munich appeared to be asleep at the start of the game, going 2-0 down to the Italian side, and if Juventus had shown some more 'Italian like' defending, they would have knocked the German's out! Those crazy minutes against Juventus show Manchester City that when Bayern Munich aren't at 100% they can be made to look vulnerable. Now the holders Barcelona are the closest you can get to a perfect side right now. At the start of April the Catalan giants where 39 games unbeaten! However, they have followed that historic run by losing two games in a row in the league. If there's ever a chance for Manchester City to turn over Barcelona and their unstoppable front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, this is that time!

But if i'm realistic for one moment, Manchester City would need a miracle to walk away from Milan in May with the famous trophy! No matter how many points I, or anyone else make about City's chances, you can make so many more saying their going to lose their semi-final 6-0 and get dumped out of Europe! Between Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich the most elite trophy in European football has been lifted 20 times, making them three of the four most successful teams in the competitions history (Only A.C Milan winning more then Bayern and Barcelona with 7). These sides have all the history and pedigree to back up either of them securing yet another title and in all likelihood one of them will win in Milan. However it's been done before and who's the say Manchester City wont upset the odds and turn over the biggest sides in Europe and, much like Chelsea in 2012, shock the world by winning their first Champions League title!

El Ca$hico - The Premier League battle of riches

Since the turn of the century the English Premier League has become over run with teams trying to buy their way to success. Without a doubt the two teams with the most success are Manchester City and Chelsea, these two sides have been the most consistent sides at challenging for the title in the last four or five seasons due to the amount of money they have spent in creating the strongest squads in the league.


Coming into the 2015/2016 Premier League season, Chelsea and Manchester City have won one each out of the last two titles, and have been named as the two favourites for this campaign. El Ca$hico as the fixture has been came to be known was first the first big clash of the season, with the Manchester club running out comfortable 3-0 winners, confirming their challenge for the title. Early on in this season the holders Chelsea have struggled to put in the performances which made winning last seasons title so visibly easy, the question is can they get back on track to retain their title, or will Manchester City keep up their early season dominance and win the Premier League title. Today I will compare these two sides and state which side I feel will win the 2015/2016 Premier League title.


Starting with the title holders Chelsea, Jose Mourinho turned heads with his signings at the start of last season, bringing in the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa, these two player topped the league in goals and assists and played a massive part in their title winning campaign. However at the start of this season, unlike all their title rivals who have spent big to improve their sides, Chelsea had failed to add to the team that won last years title, with the exception of Manchester United misfit Radamel Falcao. Until late on in the transfer window, Chelsea completed the signing of Spanish winger Pedro, who put in a man of the match performance on his debut, scoring the opening goal in the 3-2 win over West Brom. However, this transfer period can without a doubt be declared as a failure for Jose Mourinho's side, as they failed to secure Everton defender John Stones, a man they chased throughout the duration of the summer. The reason this failed signing is having such an impact on Chelsea's season is the drop in form of former England captain John Terry. The Chelsea skipper has been a first team regular since the early 2000's in the Chelsea back for, but at the age of 34, many suggest that he may be past his best days. Many individual mistakes, as well as his first red card in five years is a big factor in why the champions are left with only four points after their first four games, the second worst tally at this point of the season for defending champions in premier League history.


In the 2014/2015 season one thing that was pretty much assured when Chelsea played was that the Belgium winger Eden Hazard would put in a solid performance for the blue, and more often then not, would play a big hand in a Chelsea win. However at the start of this season, the PFA player of the year has struggled to carry on the form from last season as this has had a sizable impact of Chelsea's performances so far this time round. The Chelsea number 10 looks much more similar to the Hazard we saw when he first arrived in England, unfit and unable to deal with the physical demands of the Premier League. Now I'm in no doubt that the playmaker will return to his previous form sooner or later, but the question is whether he can have as much of an impact on Chelsea's results as he did last season. If Chelsea hope to retain their title, they may have to hope their star man returns to his previous great form as soon as possible.


Now onto the worlds richest club, Manchester City. Sheikh Mansour's side have won two out of the last four premier league titles, their first since 1968, finishing second in the other two seasons, they have also secured one FA Cup and one Capital One Cup. They have done this by being the highest spending side in the league year after year, spending over £1,000,000,000 since Shaikh bought the club in 2008, it makes City the second highest spending side in premier league history (behind Chelsea), and they have done this in much shorter time then their closest rivals. After spending much of the previous two decades jumping between the first and second tier of English football, its a welcomed change of pace for the City fans to see their side at the peak of English football. Manchester City have also recently broke the premier league transfer record, signing Kevin De Bruyne from Wolfsburg for an estimated £55,000,000, the addition of the Belgium international took City's spending for this summer to £153,000,000. Its spending like this that has made City one of the must successful sides in the Premier League over recent years, and its spending like this which has made them one of the top contenders for this years title.


Manchester City have started the 2015/2016 season at top pace, winning all four of their opening four games, including a dominant victory over champions Chelsea. With consistency being the main reason City failed to defend their title last season, this start to the campaign will put smiles on many City fans faces. The addition of 2015 golden boy winner Raheem Sterling, along side the returning Sergio Aguero, the Spaniard David Silva in some of the best form of his career, and the return to form of Yaya Toure has seen Manchester City play some of the best football we've seen in the premier League in recent years, and they look like the out right favourites for the title early on. Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany came under plenty of criticism throughout last season for failing to live up to the high standards he had set for himself through the years. However at the start of this season the Belgium international seems to have returned to the great form which has played a big part in City's previous two title winning seasons. Alongside new boy Nicolás Otamendi, City's defence looks as strong as ever. Another knock to City's campaign last time out was the inconsistency  of number one goal keeper Joe Hart. The England number one spent periods of the season on the bench due to his inconsistency, and this had a major effect on results for the Manchester side. However Hart has started this season with four clean sheets out of four, and looks back to his best. These are all factors as to why City look to be the favourites this season.


Due to a combination of transfer window success, and early form I believe Manchester City will win the 2015/2016 Premier League title, and in crushing style too. I am going to  make a prediction that the title will be secured before the 1st of May! However nothing is certain in football, particularly in England, we will never know for sure until the final whistle for this season is blown.
